that flows into you is directly proportional to the force that created it.”
“Whoa, stop right there. This sounds too much like math and science. I’m no genius.”
Aunt Melissa grabs both of April’s shoulders, and spins April to face her. “This is dead serious, and we don’t have a lot of time. You’re in a hospital, and that’s where you’ll stay unless you get serious and learn what I have to teach you now. Sandy will help you with the academics. That’s one of her responsibilities in this life. You’re supposed to help her to enjoy athletics. That’s one of your responsibilities. No one should have to go through life without all their talents having some chance to develop.”
The thought of being trapped in the hospital sobers April up. She begins to listen in earnest.
“You girls have a special Magikal bond. This bond extends from our Broken Circle to your New Circle. One of our Circle forswore Magik and broke our Circle. Your Circle, for now, is ‘A Circle of Two’. It’s just you and Sandy. The others will come when you need them or when its time for them to learn from you.” Melissa pauses to catch her breath. They start walking again in the fog. The water from the surf laps at their feet.
“Sandy is supposed to help teach you, but there isn’t time for that now. She’ll teach you Melton’s Laws of Magikal Motion. Right now, we must concentrate on getting you fully conscious.”
“Sandy’s part I understand. What am I supposed to teach Mandy?”
“How to stand up for herself, of course.” After the words are spoken by Aunt Melissa, it seems so obvious. On a gut, subconscious level, April already knows this.
“Wait . . . what’s Mandy suppose to teach us?”
“Innocence and trust. She is the Power of Trust.”
“You mean she ‘has’ the Power of Trust.”
“She’s both. I’m not going to split hairs. Good catch, but let’s worry about you now.”
Aunt Melissa turns to face April again. “Hold my hands. Repeat after me.” April takes Aunt Melissa’s hands. It feels like her aunt is pressing a round disk into her palm.
