Survival and Balance

Sandy points at Mandy. “Go, get help, NOW!”
Mandy seems to be rooted to the ground. Sandy’s command breaks her trance-like state and immediately Mandy runs down the street. At some point she shed her book bag that is flopping uselessly on her back.
Sandy turns her attention back to April and bends to feel for a pulse. There is none.
Meanwhile, Mandy’s racing down the street. She begins to panic as this neighborhood is unfamiliar to her. The only house she comes to, after what seems like an eternity of running, is Old Man McGill’s place. Mandy stops dead in her tracks. She can’t see another house at all down the road. Mandy desperately needs help, but everyone fears Old Man McGill. She has memories of when she was ten years old. McGill chased her and her friends, after they had just trampled his prized begonias. Their game of tag had gotten out of hand. Now she has no choice. Before Mandy can take a step toward the house, Old Man McGill’s voice breaks the silence and makes her jump.
“What’s wrong?” Mr. McGill is giving his beach rose bush a light trim, and so, is initially hidden from view. Mandy’s too overcome by the urgency of the situation to be afraid.
